Growing a little herb to save some money

It’s a little over 6 weeks until I start planting the first of the seedlings for our garden. I’m an avid gardener – I really love getting out in the dirt, but I also love the savings it brings us on our grocery bill.

I don’t really know how much money it saves us, to be honest. I’d estimate somewhere between 10-30$ per week, depending on what’s in season. We generally plant:

  • tomatoes
  • peppers
  • tomatillos
  • chard
  • kale (about four varieties)
  • spinach
  • squash (spaghetti, or zucchini or pattypan, although in recent years I’ve had horrendous squash beetles, so that was gross)
  • herbs (basil, oregano, thyme, mint, chives, sage, lavender)
  • carrots
  • onions (green)
  • boysenberries and raspberries
  • strawberries

Of course, some of these are perennials so I get off pretty lucky there! It’s not a huge yield, but it definitely helps, and there’s nothing quite like going out and grabbing something from the garden for dinner.

The fresh herbs are definitely the biggest money saver. They grow quickly and you don’t use a lot, but if you buy them at the store, they go bad quickly and you get way too much. We also dry them and use them throughout the winter.

We also freeze kale and chard, and have yet to buy a head of kale (which is impressive, since we usually eat kale at least 2-3 times per week, including in smoothies). So the savings continue even once the garden is done.
